PSHE & RHE

Intent

At Crawley Ridge Infant School, we aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills that they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. The children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum so that they can contribute fully to the life of their school and beyond. Our curriculum builds upon the children’s first stages of development in EYFS through progressive and sequenced topics, which revolve around three key themes: relationships, health and well-being and living in the wider world. They should learn to recognise their own worth, interacting well and safely with others, and building positive relationships. This is reinforced by our behaviour policy which is centred around the school values of being Ready, Respectful and Safe.

We actively promote British Values - Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. These values are taught explicitly through PSHE and RE, but are also met by delivering a broad and balanced curriculum.

It is essential that we teach PSHE to provide the link between pupils’ health and well-being, and their academic progress.

Implementation

At Crawley Ridge Infant School, PSHE plays a vital part of our children’s education and is therefore timetabled to be taught at least weekly to ensure that quality time is dedicated to these areas. PSHE is also subconsciously weaved throughout most of our teaching all day, every day. Many objectives from the curriculum are covered as an important part of school assemblies, where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

We follow a Scheme of Work called SCARF – Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship (Coram Life Education). Developed by teachers and centred on a values-based and ‘Growth Mindset’ approach, SCARF’s lesson plans and resources help to promote positive behaviour, mental health, well-being, resilience and achievement.

SCARF lesson plans are organised around the PSHE Association’s Programmes of Study Learning Opportunities, which includes three core themes of Health and Well-being; Relationships; and, Living in the Wider World. These themes have been broken down into six main areas for termly coverage, and are ordered as follows:

Keeping Myself Safe
Rights and Responsibilities
Being my Best
Growing and Changing

In addition to dedicated PSHE lessons, many other curriculum subjects make a link to PSHE, British Values, SMSC and the language is used consistently by all staff. British Values and SMSC displays throughout the school also reinforce the PSHE curriculum, further enabling children to make links. Beyond this, pupils are encouraged to show leadership in their community through our School Council.

At Crawley Ridge Infant School, our PSHE curriculum demonstrates appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to fulfil the statutory duties of the Relationship Education (RE), Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education (HE) curriculums. It is hoped that our overall curriculum is designed to directly support the pastoral education of our pupils as well as the academic outcomes that the school aims for.

Impact

By the time our children leave Crawley Ridge Infant School, they will have taken part in many varied learning opportunities and experiences, enabling them to gain increasing independence and physical and social awareness. The KS1 programme builds on the skills that pupils began to acquire during the Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) to develop effective relationships, assume greater personal responsibility and manage personal safety, including online. Our PSHE education helps pupils to manage the physical and emotional changes as they begin school, progress through and then transition to junior school. They have a growing understanding of the world around them and most are beginning to make an active contribution to their school community.

Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school – attendance will be in-line with national standards and behaviour will be good.
Participation in extracurricular activity both in school and beyond is encouraged and celebrated.
Pupil Voice Surveys are used to assess knowledge of how to stay safe and emotionally confident within the school.
Children will become healthy and responsible members of society.
Children will achieve age-related expectations across the wider curriculum.

RHE

In September 2020, updated statutory guidance came into effect in regards to RHE (Relationship and Health Education). At Crawley Ridge Infants we ensure the new guidance is covered thoroughly within our PSHE curriculum.
